Welcome to the Department of German and European Studies at Keimyung University
The Department of German and European Studies is a vibrant and forward-looking academic unit, established in 2022 through the merger of the Department of German Studies and the European Studies program. We aim to cultivate future experts in German and European culture, with a focus on European integration and a global outlook.
A Broad and Interdisciplinary Education
Our program offers students a comprehensive education in German and European literature, culture, history, politics, economy, and society. This interdisciplinary approach helps students develop a nuanced understanding of Europe’s past and present, and its role in the world.
Multilingual Learning Environment
Students receive intensive language training in German, English, and French—the three most widely spoken languages in Europe. From 1975 to 2024, our department was supported by native-speaking lecturers through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). While this official partnership has ended, we continue to offer high-quality German instruction through native-speaking teachers. English education is equally emphasized, with interactive courses taught by a native-speaking professor from Ireland.
Global Opportunities and Exchange
We maintain strong partnerships with the Universities of Passau and Augsburg in Germany through a joint exchange program. Our students have the opportunity to spend a year abroad, immerse themselves in German academic and cultural life, and strengthen their language skills. We also offer the European Studies English Forum for advanced English training, and support students in obtaining French language certification through the DELF program.
Cultural Programs and Student Life
Beyond the classroom, our department provides a wide range of cultural and academic activities. Highlights include:
- - Monthly Stammtisch events, where students and faculty gather in an informal setting to share German and European culture through engaging, interactive activities.
- - An annual Academic Festival on European Studies, showcasing student work and contemporary themes.
- - The festive Novemberfest, celebrating the traditions and diversity of Germany and other European countries.
These events foster a strong sense of community and offer meaningful opportunities for cultural exchange and language practice.
Our Mission
We are fully dedicated to the success of our students. Our mission is to prepare them to become globally competent professionals with deep knowledge of German and European history, politics, society, and culture. Whether pursuing careers in international organizations, education, business, or diplomacy, our graduates are equipped with the critical skills and intercultural awareness needed to thrive in today’s interconnected world.
